The opening ceremony of the Conference was graced by, among others, the President of the Jesuit Conference of Africa and Madagascar (JCAM), Fr. A.E. Orobator, the Regional Superior of the Jesuit Rwanda-Burundi Province, Fr. Jean Baptiste Ganza and the Rwanda Oxfam Country Director, Ms Alice Anukur.
During his keynote address, Fr. Orobator acknowledged the difficulty of being a young person in Africa, noting the rising unemployment levels among young people, lack of access to education and other socials services. However, Fr. Orobator expressed confidence that despite these difficulties they are experiencing, the youth the world over were demanding change and trying to make things better. He encouraged the youth gathered at the Lead Magis Africa conference to do the same, prodding them that there is something great in them that needs to be let out. Fr. Orobator concluded by letting the young people know that “You do not need permission to be change makers.”
